Dr Neary has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital since 2012. She has led the chronic pain service since then, expanding it to include a dedicated clinical nurse specialist, physiotherapist and psychologist as an MDT service from 2014.

She graduated from University of Leeds in 2000, began her anaesthesia training in north east England in Sunderland and Northumberland, and completed her registrar training in the Mersey region, including a year of advanced peadiatric training at Alder Hey Hospital. Prior to taking up her consultant post she completed a 12 month post-CCT fellowship in paediatric anaesthesia and paediatric pain at Montreal Children’s Hospital and McGill University.

She completed an MSc in Pain Management in 2017 via Edinburgh University, and post graduate diploma in Medical Law in 2011 via Northumbria University.

Dr. McVey is a practicing Anesthesiologist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada with an interest in transfusion medicine and patient blood management (PBM).
Clinically he is the departmental Pediatric Anesthesia liaison with the blood bank, and is a co-lead with the Pediatric Anesthesia spine program. Mark’s translational research program as an early career investigator focuses on topics relevant to transfusion medicine and PBM including respiratory transfusion reactions such as transfusion-related acute lung injury and transfusion associated circulatory overload, platelet biology, perioperative anemia, development of extracorporeal uterine support and developing tools for assessing fibrinolysis. Mark's studies have been published in high impact journals such as Blood, The Journal of Extracellular vesicles and the European Respiratory Journal.
Mark's research is currently funded by a Canadian New Frontiers Research Exploration grant, Canadian Hematology Society R.K. Smiley Award and The Society of Pediatric Anesthesia.

Dr. Adrian Upex has been a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist in Bristol since 2012, at Frenchay Hospital and Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC). He graduated from Edinburgh University in 2000 and completed his anaesthetic registrar training and neuroanaesthesia experience in the south west of England, at Frenchay and BRHC's PICU and anaesthesia departments. He also completed a year of advanced training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.
His specialist interests include neurosurgery, spine, trauma, plastics and burns anaesthesia. He also works regularly for the Wales and West Transport for Children (WATCh) paediatric critical care retrieval service. Dr. Upex recently completed 5 years' service as the theatre and surgery clinical governance lead in Bristol.
Adrian has worked in Peru most formally as a visiting lecturer in the Lima teaching hospitals on behalf of Health Volunteers Overseas. Outside of work, he coaches, and occasionally competes, for the Japan Arts Centre judo club in Bristol.

I have been a consultant at Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital for over 20 years. I am closely involved with infants and children with liver disease undergoing liver and or small bowel and kidney transplantation, as well as undergoing a variety of other procedures.

Children with liver disease can be a challenging group. Careful assessment, planning and attention to detail are important in order to provide safe anaesthesia and good outcome. A thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of liver disease is helpful in managing such cases. Education and training are thus incredibly important.

My other interest is long term central venous access. I am a member of the vascular access team for the hospital providing tunneled central lines for parenteral nutrition, dialysis and chemotherapy.

Outside of work I spend most of my time at my athletics club reflecting on my deteriorating running performance.

I am a Consultant in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care and Cardiac Anaesthesia, with a particular interest in congenital heart disease in both paediatrics and adults, and in advanced cardiovascular support utilising extracorporeal circuits (ECMO).

I trained in medicine at Cambridge University, qualifying in 1998, and also completed an MA in Pharmacology. I have been a Consultant at University Hospital Southampton since 2008, where I am the Lead for Congenital Cardiac Anaesthesia, Lead Anaesthetist for ECMO, and was ClinicalLead for Adult Cardiac Intensive Care from 2018-2022 during the Covid pandemic. I co-ordinate anaesthesia for patients with advanced renal tumours requiring cardiopulmonary bypass to facilitate IVC surgery, and for patients with congenital heart disease in pregnancy or who are undergoing non-cardiac surgery. 

I spent a year on Sabbatical in 2009 working at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan specialising in the care of congenital heart disease patients with single-ventricle circulations. I am married with 4 grown-up children and live in the New Forest and am a keen photographer and motorcyclist.

Dr Anil Visram was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London NHS Trust in 1997.

His postgraduate clinical training was based in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal London Hospital and The Royal Free Hospital rotations. He obtained his Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia from Great Ormond Street Hospital London, and also holds a fellowship in Neuroanaesthesia from the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. His research interests include paediatric emergency and trauma management and neonatal fluid resuscitation

Stewart joined the Nuffield Department of Anaesthesia in Oxford as a Consultant in 2016. 

After graduating from UCL Medical School, he trained in Anaesthesia in the Oxford Deanery, including a post CCT Paediatric Anaesthesia fellowship in Oxford. This was followed by a further fellowship in Birmingham Children's Hospital, both with a focus on Anaesthesia for Craniofacial Surgery. 

His additional interests include acute pain management, out of theatre anaesthesia and interventional radiology, and data analysis.

Dr Steve Roberts has been a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, for the past 18 years.

As a Registrar Dr Roberts became interested in the use of ultrasound to image children's spines and soon realised that it had begun to be used in adults in Europe to identify peripheral nerves. As a consequence he was an early adopter of these techniques; starting one of the first UK ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia courses.

He is Trust Lead for ACSA, Day Surgery Unit and Radiology and is Co-Founder of the Ultrasound for Paediatric Anaesthetists course (U4PA) which offers 2 days of hands on, practical ultrasound workshops.

Steve is the Editor of the Oxford Handbook Paediatric Anaesthesia, and Author of Paediatric Anaesthesia – the Oxford Specialist handbook the second edition of which was published in 2019.

Steve’s main areas of anaesthetic interest include regional anaesthesia and craniofacial surgery.

Liz Allison is a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.  She has come full circle having studied at Sheffield Medical School and returned to the city for her Consultant position in 2016, after anaesthetic training in different areas of the UK and overseas.

Liz initially trained in paediatric medicine before moving into anaesthesia, with the intention of becoming a paediatric anaesthetist.

Her training posts have been on the South Coast of England and subsequently in the Oxford region for registrar years.

Post CCT, Liz spent a year at British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, where she gained experience in using TIVA in Children.  For many years, BC Children’s have been leaders in the world of Paediatric TIVA, both clinically and through their research, so it was a privilege to train in that environment and acquire knowledge and skills in this field of anaesthesia. 

Having brought this experience back to the UK, Liz remains a TIVA devotee and enthusiast and practices and teaches on the subject.   She is a Faculty member for “TIVA for Tots” which provides education on TIVA usage in children, in the form of scientific and clinical lectures and interactive workshops.

She now works in a friendly, progressive and dynamic anaesthetic department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where TIVA has been embraced and is now the anaesthetic of choice in the vast majority of cases. 

Arnie has been a consultant paediatric anaesthetist in Oxford since 2008.

Arnie graduated from Barts and the London Medical School. He trained in anaesthesia in East London and Essex, with further experience in paediatric anaesthesia at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

His interests include management and training of the paediatric difficult airway, and multi-disciplinary simulation training.

He is currently Clinical Lead for the Paediatric Anaesthetic Group at the John Radcliffe Hospital and has directed the Oxford Paediatric Difficult Airway Workshops since 2012.

Claire is a consultant in congenital cardiothoracic anaesthesia at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Claire graduated from Oxford University and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical Schools. She trained in paediatrics at Addenbrookes and Great Ormond Street Hospitals and in anaesthesia and PICU at Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospitals and Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney.

Her interests are paediatric anaesthesia, adult congenital cardiac anaesthesia, mechanical circulatory support, transplantation, anaesthesia for patients with a single ventricle and teaching.
