Dr Bill Hinton

Dr Josie Brown presented Dr Bill Hinton

‘Bill trained in Cambridge, London, Oxford, Newcastle and Toronto. He arrived in Leeds in 1984, just as the hospital was opening its new Women’s and Children’s building. He joined a team of only two paediatric anaesthetists providing 24/7 cover for neonatal anaestheisa on the Leeds General Infirmary’s site at that time. Both Bill and his colleague were absolutely legendary for their work ethic and attention to detail, leading to extraordinarily high standards of clinical care. In addition to a huge clinical workload, Bill was instrumental in founding the Leeds PICU and retrieval service. He served locally as college tutor, then on APA Council, first as Member for England and Wales, then as Meetings Secretary.

When asked for a quote, one consultant colleague called Bill “the wisest anaesthetist I’ve ever met”, and opinion certainly borne out by the way he was 1st choice advisor on tricky clinical issues for consultants all around the region. When I asked the nurses for quotes they blushed and laughed, but solidly refused to tell me anything more! Ladies and gentlemen – it is my great pleasure to present Dr Bill Hinton for honorary membership of the APA.’
