Swift Survey Submission 2026

The PATRN Committee are pleased to announce submissions are now open for this year’s Swift Survey.  Swift Surveys are snap-shot surveys on a topic relevant to paediatric anaesthesia.  Successful entries are collaboratively developed by the submitting author and PATRN committee to produce a survey that will then be circulated at the APAGBI ASM on 11-12th June in Plymouth. The survey is now in its tenth year of running and is an exciting opportunity for trainees.

Successful authors are encouraged to attend the ASM to help to promote their Swift Survey. Following closure of the survey, the author will then work alongside PATRN to analyse the results and chose a suitable avenue for disseminating the findings.  Previous Swift Surveys have been presented internationally at the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesia (ESPA) and published in Paediatric Anaesthesia.  It is anticipated that successful authors will attend the 2027 APAGBI ASM to present their Swift Survey results.

Some previously covered topics include:

  •  Anaesthesia for children with congenital heart disease for non-cardiac surgery
  • Paediatric emergency front of neck access
  • Emergency suxamethonium use in paediatric anaesthesia
  • Anaesthesia in children living with obesity
  • Management of extravasation injuries
  • Use of nitrous oxide in paediatric anaesthesia
  • Extubation management decisions and technique
  • Regional blocks in paediatric anaesthesia

The survey topic should be broad and of relevance to paediatric anaesthesia in both the district general and tertiary hospital setting. It should be around 6 – 8 questions long (not including demographic details – PATRN’s standardised respondent demographic questions will be added to all successful Swift survey submissions). Questions should be succinct, and the survey should take around 2-3 minutes to complete. A previous swift survey is attached as an example alongside the proposal form.

Proposals will be anonymised prior to review. Scoring is by the PATRN committee and APAGBI Scientific Committee members. The deadline for submissions is the 28th February 2026.
